Roles Vs True Identity

Ever thought that our identity is distinct from the roles we play?

In our lives, we all play different roles. Every new phase of life demands us to get into a fresh role. Gender, professional, and familial are a few striking roles that most of us play. Very often it happens that we attach ourselves to roles so much that we can't see and think beyond them. And all of this happens unconsciously.

For example, a girl makes a career choice, she opts for a teaching profession, now she considers herself a teacher all throughout her life until she retires. In her mind, her image of being a human and her role has been intertwined. She can't see her separately from her role. She has accepted the role so much that she can't make a distinction any longer.

Like that, a man thinks himself to be a husband, and with that comes new responsibilities. But who has got these roles, and responsibilities? The person. We never try to dig deeper and find our real existence. We are not the roles, this must be clear.

Most of the time we are so entangled in these roles that we forget to ask the fundamental and existential questions.

So how to unlearn this kind of conditioning? Be aware that it exists. Be conscious that you are not the role that you play. That's it.

On thinking about it deeply, a sense of gap will emerge between your worldly roles and yourself. This will not only allow you to detach from the world but also unburden you discarding the useless baggage. It will reduce unnecessary worries arising from taking things personally. All in all, this understanding will help you see life with more clarity.

The one who can be freed of all of such ideas can really get to know about his/her existence in its truest sense. For very long we have been attaching ourselves with layers and layers of falsity. The best way to get rid of falsehood is to see the truth as it is. For that, you must be receptive, being completely open to wisdom.
